This 2014 crown marks the approach of the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, fought in May–June 1916, the largest naval engagement of the First World War and the only major fleet action between the Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy. Neither side claimed a clean victory: the Germans sank more tonnage, but the British retained strategic control of the North Sea for the remainder of the war.
