The Battle of Hafrsfjord, fought circa 872 AD off the southwest coast of Norway, was the engagement through which Harald Fairhair effectively unified Norway under a single king — the first time that had been achieved. The Isle of Man's connection is direct: the Norse who lost that battle, rather than submit to Harald's rule, colonized the Hebrides, Orkney, and Mann, shaping the island's language, legal system, and place names for centuries.
The Manx parliament, Tynwald, traces its institutional origins to the Norse thing assemblies brought by exactly those post-Hafrsfjord settlers.
