Pobjoy Mint struck this issue for the Isle of Man, which has long used its Crown series as a vehicle for wildlife subjects with genuine local relevance — the Atlantic Puffin nests in significant numbers along the island's northern and western coasts. The 1996 program coincided with broader European interest in seabird conservation following North Sea overfishing that had devastated sand eel populations, the puffin's primary food source, through the late 1980s and into the 1990s.
