| Beschrijving voorzijde | Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, rendered in high relief after the fourth definitive portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Queen is shown with elaborately styled hair adorned with a tiara or diadem, wearing a draped neckline. The engraver's initials IRB appear truncated at the base of the neck. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs across the upper field, with GIBRALTAR continuing to the right and the date 2003 positioned at lower right. A fine beaded border encircles the entire obverse. |

Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns in extraordinary volume since the 1990s, contracting with the Pobjoy Mint and others to produce themed series covering virtually every major international event. The 2003 Athens Olympics program alone generated dozens of individual sport-specific strikes, field hockey among them — a sport with negligible following in Gibraltar, a territory of under 35,000 people with no competitive national team in the discipline.
Issued a full year before the Athens Games actually took place in August 2004.
