Admiral Sir James Somerville is best remembered for commanding Force H at Gibraltar in 1940 and executing — under direct Admiralty orders he personally opposed — the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir, which killed nearly 1,300 French sailors within minutes. He considered the order one of the most repugnant of his career and wept afterward. Gibraltar's choice to commemorate him is pointed: Force H operated directly from the Rock, and Somerville ran some of the war's most consequential Mediterranean operations from that base, including the relief convoys to Malta.
