The Isle of Man's long-running cat crown series, launched in 1988, became one of the more commercially successful topical programs in modern commemorative coinage — unusual in that the Manx cat, native to the island, gave the series genuine local relevance rather than the cynical wildlife theming common to small-jurisdiction issues. The Abyssinian entry sits near the tail end of the series' most active period, by which point the program had expanded well beyond native breeds into a broad catalog of pedigreed cats with no particular connection to Man.
