Gibraltar's crown-sized commemoratives of this period were issued through the Pobjoy Mint under licensing arrangements that gave the territory unusual latitude to produce collector pieces outside the constraints facing larger Commonwealth mints. The 90th birthday series appeared across multiple Gibraltar denominations simultaneously, a stacking strategy that drew criticism from dealers who felt it diluted collector interest across what was functionally the same event commemorated in slightly different packaging.
The "1st effigy" designation refers to Arnold Machin's portrait, first adopted in 1968 and used on Gibraltar coinage into the decimal era — making its appearance on a 2016 issue a deliberate retrograde choice rather than an oversight.
