Gibraltar's commemorative crown program has long operated as a revenue-generating exercise, producing themed issues with little connection to the territory's monetary needs. This piece marks Elizabeth II's 80th birthday by spanning her life in decade-long segments — a format Pobjoy Mint, Gibraltar's long-standing striking partner, refined into a reliable commercial formula through the 1990s and 2000s.
The 1967–1976 segment covers the period of Britain's difficult entry into the European Economic Community, which Gibraltar residents voted overwhelmingly to resist in their own 1967 referendum, choosing to remain under British sovereignty by 12,138 votes to 44.
