The Supermarine Spitfire entered RAF service in 1938, and by the Battle of Britain in 1940 had become the aircraft most closely associated with British survival in the air war — though the Hurricane actually downed more German aircraft during that campaign. The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, targeting the collector market almost exclusively, and this 2006 piece marks the Spitfire's 70th anniversary from its maiden flight in March 1936.
