Additional information

The Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in 1348, limits its membership to 24 knights at any one time — a number that has held since the original statutes. Sir John Major became the 1000th knight appointed to the Order when he received the honor in 2005, a milestone calculated by working through every appointment across six and a half centuries. Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory so remote it has no airstrip, issues commemorative crowns largely as revenue instruments rather than circulating currency — the island's population has never exceeded 300.
