New Zealand's 1953 coronation crown was struck specifically to mark Elizabeth II's accession — one of several Commonwealth nations to issue commemorative crowns that year, each independently commissioned. The New Zealand piece used the Gillick portrait, Mary Gillick's effigy that had been selected for general circulation coinage across the Commonwealth, here making its first appearance on a New Zealand crown denomination.
Demand was high enough that pieces were sold directly to the public at face value through post offices, meaning many went straight into collections and never circulated.
