1 Crown Declaration of the Republic of Malawi

Malawi's independence from Britain came in 1964, but the country remained a constitutional monarchy with Hastings Banda serving under the Crown for two years. The 1966 crown marks the moment Banda formalized what was already a personal autocracy — the declaration of a republic with himself as president. It was also the year he purged the last of his cabinet ministers who had challenged him, consolidating control that would last until 1994.

The crown denomination itself was a deliberate anachronism, borrowed from British numismatic tradition for a nation severing its British ties.
