Obverse description Central shield bearing the Cross of St George (argent on azure), displayed within an open laurel and palm wreath tied at the base. A small sun mintmark appears at the top of the wreath. The circumferential legend in Latin script reads THE·COMMONWEALTH·OF·ENGLAND, running around the full periphery within a plain outer border. The design is characteristic of the austere republican coinage introduced after the abolition of the monarchy, deliberately eschewing any royal imagery.
