Obverse description Central field features the shield of the Commonwealth of England — displaying the cross of St. George in the first and fourth quarters and the Irish harp in the second and third — enclosed within a laurel and palm wreath tied at the base. A small sun or star device appears at the top of the wreath above the shield. The peripheral legend reads THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND in raised Latin lettering, separated by mullets, running clockwise within a beaded border.
