Biafra's silver crown issues of 1969 were produced not for circulation but for foreign exchange — a desperate attempt by the secessionist government to raise hard currency as the Nigerian federal blockade tightened and the republic entered its final months. Ojukwu himself had fled to Ivory Coast by January 1970, weeks after these were struck.
KM#5 is the silver issue within a set that also appeared in gold and base metal, sold through overseas agents to collectors and sympathetic foreign buyers. The Republic of Biafra ceased to exist on January 15, 1970.
