Gibraltar's currency issues have long occupied an odd jurisdictional space — the territory mints legal tender under its own authority despite using the pound sterling for everyday commerce, which means pieces like this one are technically spendable but functionally collectibles from the moment of issue. The coronation of Charles III on 6 May 2023 predictably triggered a wave of commemorative output across British Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories, Gibraltar among them.
The gold plating here is selective rather than full-wash, applied over copper-nickel to isolate specific design elements in color-ink finishing — a production technique that degrades unpredictably at the plating edges with handling.
