Obverse description Finely engraved laureate and draped bust of King Charles II facing right, rendered in high relief with elaborate flowing hair characteristic of Thomas Simon's masterful workmanship. The effigy displays the king wearing a laurel wreath and a draped mantle, with fine detail in the hair curls and facial features reflecting the exceptional artistry for which this Petition Crown is renowned. A beaded inner circle frames the bust, with the royal legend distributed around the periphery of the field. This obverse is widely regarded as one of the finest portrait engravings in English numismatic history, created by Simon as a direct appeal to Charles II to retain his services as chief engraver.
