The Kronenthaler was never purely a domestic coin. Minted in Brussels and other Austrian Netherlands facilities, it circulated aggressively across the Levant and Ottoman trade networks, where its consistent silver content made it a preferred medium of exchange over locally issued specie. Maria Theresia's administration understood this — the coin was effectively an instrument of commercial foreign policy.
After her death in 1780, production of the type continued under her name and portrait by imperial decree, a policy sustained well into the nineteenth century precisely because the coin's reputation in eastern markets depended on that specific identity remaining unchanged.
