Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's long-running coin program, which commissioned commemorative issues from member states beginning in the early 1970s to promote agricultural development awareness. Nicaragua's participation came during a period of post-Sandinista economic reconstruction — the country had only recently transitioned out of hyperinflation that had peaked in 1988 at an annual rate exceeding 33,000 percent, forcing a currency redenomination in 1990 that replaced the old córdoba at a rate of one new córdoba to five million old ones.
