Nicaragua's córdoba has been redenominated multiple times since the currency's introduction in 1912, most dramatically during the Sandinista-era hyperinflation of the late 1980s when the original córdoba was replaced at a rate of 1,000 to 1, and then again in 1991 at 5,000,000 to 1. The coin series beginning in 2002 reflects the stabilized córdoba oro, anchored initially to the US dollar and later managed under a crawling peg regime administered by the Banco Central.
Nickel clad steel replaced earlier compositions as a straightforward cost-reduction measure following regional trends in Central American coinage from the same period.
