This piece commemorates the selection of Prince Otto of Bavaria as the first King of Greece following the London Conference of 1832, which formally established Greek independence under Great Power guarantee. Otto, second son of Ludwig I, was seventeen years old when installed on a throne that did not yet have a capital city. The pattern designation reflects Munich's exploratory striking of commemorative thalers before official series production was confirmed — standard practice at the Royal Bavarian Mint when political outcomes were still being ratified by treaty.
