Bavaria struck this Geschichtstaler in 1833 to commemorate the formation of the Zollverein, the German customs union that came into force on January 1st of that year. The Zollverein was not a Prussian gift to smaller states — it was a hard-fought commercial negotiation that ultimately excluded Austria, a deliberate structural choice with consequences that played out over the following four decades.
Geschichtsthaler of this type were issued as commemorative pieces rather than struck for general circulation, though they are legal tender at face value. The KM#762 attribution places it among a broader series of Bavarian historical talers commissioned under Louis I, who used coinage aggressively as a medium of dynastic and political messaging.
