Beschrijving voorzijde Bare-headed right-facing bust of Frederick III, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, rendered in the baroque portrait style with flowing long hair resting on the shoulder. The effigy is finely detailed with a draped truncation. The circular Latin legend reads FRIDER III D G GOTHAN SAXONVM DVX, interrupted by a small mintmaster's mark at the base of the bust. The portrait is set within a wide, unadorned field with a plain inner border.

Aanvullende informatie

Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was among the smallest of the Ernestine duchies, perpetually squeezed between larger Saxon neighbors, and Frederick III ruled it for over five decades — one of the longer reigns among the fragmented Thuringian states. The Conventions thaler standard itself had been fixed by the Munich Convention of 1753, obliging participating states to strike 10 talers to the Cologne mark of silver, a monetary agreement Frederick's treasury was notably slow to fully adopt.

The Schnee and Steguweit references diverge slightly on die pairings for this type, suggesting multiple working dies were used across the four-year emission window.
