The Olocuiltense is a municipal complementary currency issued by the Municipalidad de Olocuilta, a small town in La Paz department, El Salvador, primarily to support the Mercado Gastronómico — a pupusa market of genuine regional fame. El Salvador dollarized fully in 2001, leaving municipalities no monetary tools of their own; local scrip of this kind fills a narrow but real economic niche, circulating as a voucher-like instrument redeemable with participating vendors inside the market.
