The 1991 transition to copper-nickel clad steel for this denomination reflected El Salvador's broader effort to reduce minting costs during a period of severe fiscal strain — the country was still absorbing the economic damage of a civil war that had run since 1979 and would not formally end until the Chapultepec Peace Accords of January 1992. The clad steel composition replaced an earlier copper-nickel version, KM#156, distinguishable by magnet.
