The Banco Internacional de Costa Rica was the country's sole official issuing bank from 1914 until it was absorbed into the newly created Banco Nacional de Costa Rica in 1936 — meaning this 1935 note was printed in what were effectively the institution's final operating months. The ABNC contract for this series had been running since the early 1920s, and the plates show it: the printing quality is consistent but the designs were never significantly refreshed across the life of the series.

Pick 166 is among the last dated issues under the Banco Internacional name before the legislative reorganization took effect.
