Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma II acceded to the Travancore throne in 1931 at age eighteen under a British-supervised regency, with full ruling powers assumed only in 1936. His reign coincided with intensifying pressure from the Indian National Congress and internal agitation over temple entry rights — the Travancore Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936 came just two years before this issue. The princely state maintained its own coinage authority jealously, one of the few such states to do so with genuine administrative independence from the British Indian monetary system.
KM#60 is among the last bronze issues of independent Travancore before the state's controversial accession to India in 1949.
