The Central Reserve Bank of China was a puppet institution established by the Japanese-backed Wang Jingwei regime in Nanjing in 1941 — though notes dated 1940 were issued ahead of the bank's formal inauguration, pre-positioned for immediate circulation once the regime declared itself. Watson Printing Company was a Shanghai-based firm, one of several local printers pressed into service after Japanese occupation cut off access to the established European security printers that Chinese banks had long relied upon.
The J-series Pick designation signals Allied classification as occupation currency, issued under duress rather than sovereign monetary authority. F.H. Chow served as the bank's first governor throughout its short existence, which ended with Japan's surrender in 1945.
