The Northwest Branch of the Chinese Soviet Republic National Bank operated out of the Shaanxi-Gansu border region at a time when the Communist-controlled soviet areas were under sustained Nationalist encirclement campaigns. These fractional notes — denominated in chiao rather than full yuan — were essential for everyday market transactions in areas where copper coinage had effectively disappeared from circulation due to hoarding and Nationalist economic blockades.
