The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued numerous small-denomination collector and novelty pieces since the late 1990s with limited or no genuine circulation intent. The 1 centime denomination is functionally worthless within the country's franc-based economy, where even the smallest transactions run to hundreds of francs.
The "Lantana" designation refers to the flowering shrub genus native to tropical regions including central Africa — one of dozens of botanical and wildlife themes the DRC has attached to minor issues in this period.
