Obverse description At center, a highly detailed depiction of an olive tree in full canopy, its spreading branches and elaborate root system rendered in bold relief, symbolizing the town of Ollioules and its olive-growing heritage. The tree occupies a recessed inner circle, framed by a raised border. The legend '1 euro cent' curves along the upper portion of the border, and 'd'OLLIOULES' is inscribed along the lower portion, both in an informal hand-lettered style. The overall design is rendered in brass with a plain, unadorned field surrounding the central motif.

Additional information

Ollioules is a small commune in the Var department, and this piece belongs to the wave of privately-issued "euro" tokens that flooded French local commerce in the mid-1990s — years before the actual euro existed. Municipalities, retailers, and regional councils issued these fantasy denominations as promotional currency ahead of EMU accession, with no legal tender status and no official sanction from the Banque de France. Some circulated locally in participating shops; most were bought by collectors and never saw a till.

The 1997 date places it in the peak year of this speculative token craze.
