Uruguay's 1953 coinage reform introduced the new centésimo denominations in base metal for circulation, but the mint — almost certainly working with the Casa de Moneda de Uruguay — produced gold patterns across several denominations as presentation pieces, likely for government officials or international monetary exhibitions. The 1-centésimo gold pattern in this series is among the smaller strikes, and KM records only a handful of confirmed examples.
