Carlo Felice came to the Sardinian throne in 1821 after his predecessor Carlo Alberto was forced to abdicate following a constitutional crisis, and his reign was defined by a sharp reactionary turn — suppression of liberal movements, close alignment with Austria, and a general retrenchment of modernizing reforms. The Bologna mint struck this centesimo under contract, one of several facilities used by Sardinia during this period when Turin's own capacity was supplemented by peninsular mints.
