These centavos belong to the Austral period — Argentina had just replaced the peso argentino in June 1985, lopping four zeroes off the currency as part of the Austral Plan, an austerity package designed to arrest inflation running above 1,000% annually. The plan worked briefly, then collapsed. By the time production of this type ended in 1987, inflation was accelerating again toward the hyperinflationary crisis that would ultimately kill the Austral itself by 1991.
