Vila Real de Santo António sits on the Portuguese side of the Guadiana River, directly across from Ayamonte in Spain — a location that made small-change shortages during the First World War acutely disruptive to daily commerce. When the national mint couldn't supply adequate copper coinage, local merchants and firms stepped in with privately issued cédulas, paper tokens denominated in centavos and accepted informally within the issuing firm's trade network. Pedro José Candido & Cia. Limitada was among them.
These emergency mercantile notes had no legal-tender status and circulated purely on local trust.
