Albergue e Azylo Elvenses was a charitable institution in Elvas, Portugal — a shelter and asylum in the literal sense, housing the indigent and infirm. During the severe coin shortages that plagued Portugal in the early twentieth century, particularly around and after World War One, many municipalities, religious bodies, and private charitable organizations issued their own cédulas or emergency fractional notes to keep small transactions moving. This note is one of those stop-gap instruments, authenticated by hand signature and local ink stamp rather than any central printing authority.
The MA#810 reference places it within Manuel Artur Norton's catalog of Portuguese local issues — a collecting area where provenance and condition vary wildly, and where genuine circulation wear is actually expected.
