The Cabral centavo series takes its name from Pedro Álvares Cabral, whose 1500 landing in what is now Bahia was the occasion for Brazil's 2000th-anniversary celebrations — the entire redesigned coin family was introduced in anticipation of that quincentennial. The 1 centavo denomination was retained despite periodic arguments within the Banco Central that coins below 5 centavos were economically pointless, a debate that has resurfaced repeatedly since.
Brazil finally discontinued the 1 centavo in 2005, having concluded that production costs exceeded face value by a significant margin.
