| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator credited with the discovery of Brazil on April 22, 1500, occupying the central field. Two stylized sailing vessels flank the portrait on either side, evoking the fleet of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. The legend BRASIL appears above and CABRAL below the effigy, both inscribed in Latin characters. |

The Cabral centavo series takes its name from Pedro Álvares Cabral, whose 1500 landing in what is now Bahia was the occasion for Brazil's 2000th-anniversary celebrations — the entire redesigned coin family was introduced in anticipation of that quincentennial. The 1 centavo denomination was retained despite periodic arguments within the Banco Central that coins below 5 centavos were economically pointless, a debate that has resurfaced repeatedly since.
Brazil finally discontinued the 1 centavo in 2005, having concluded that production costs exceeded face value by a significant margin.
