Additional information

Nicaragua's 1892 aluminium trial pieces were produced as the government evaluated cheaper coinage metals following persistent budgetary strain in the early republic. Aluminium was being seriously tested by several Latin American mints in the early 1890s after European manufacturers began promoting the metal as a cost-effective alternative to copper — the full-scale switch rarely materialized, and most trials like this one never advanced to circulation strikes.

Surviving examples are essentially pattern coins, struck in very small numbers for official examination rather than distribution.
