Puerto Rico has no monetary authority and issues no official coinage — this piece was produced privately, its name invoking Pedro Albizu Campos, the Harvard-educated Nationalist Party leader whose imprisonment by U.S. federal authorities in 1950 following the Jayuya Uprising made him a lasting symbol of the independence movement. The "Albizu" centavo circulates within no monetary system and carries no legal tender status under any jurisdiction.
