El Salvador's centavo coinage of this period was issued under the Banco Central de Reserva, which had managed the country's monetary affairs since its founding in 1934 following the catastrophic collapse of the coffee economy during the Great Depression. By the mid-1970s, the centavo's purchasing power had eroded to near irrelevance, and coins of this denomination were already being phased out of practical commerce well before the civil conflict of the 1980s disrupted minting operations entirely.
The KM#135.2 designation distinguishes this from the earlier .1 variant by a modified die — collectors should verify the specific legend spacing before attributing.
