Obverse description The national coat of arms of Guatemala occupies the central field, depicting two crossed rifles and two crossed swords behind a wreath of laurel branches. At the center of the arms, a scroll of parchment bears the inscription recording Guatemalan independence on 15 September 1821. Surmounting the arms is the Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala, perched with wings displayed. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA runs along the upper periphery, with the date inscribed in the lower portion of the design.
