Obverse description The Guatemalan national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quetzal bird perched atop a scroll inscribed with the independence date legend LIBERTAD 15 DE SETIEMBRE DE 1821, framed by two crossed rifles and two crossed swords, and flanked by laurel branches on either side. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA arcs around the upper periphery. The date of issue appears in the lower exergue.

Reverse description A draped bust of Fray Bartolome de las Casas facing left occupies the central field, rendered in moderate relief with curled hair visible at the nape. The denomination UN CENTAVO curves along the upper periphery, flanked by small decorative dots, while the subject's name FRAY BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS arcs around the lower periphery, completing the full circular legend.
