Guatemala's shift to brass for this small denomination came as part of a broader monetary rationalization under the Arévalo administration, which had inherited a currency system badly distorted by wartime metal shortages and U.S. strategic procurement. The KM#254 type ran through the early Arbenz years without interruption, a period of significant land reform legislation that had little visible effect on everyday coinage production.
