Portugal's post-WWI monetary reforms pushed a new colonial coinage into Angola in the early 1920s, replacing the older réis-denominated issues as the colony transitioned to the centavo system under the escudo. The 1921 issue was among the first struck under this framework, produced in Lisbon for circulation in a territory whose economy was still heavily dependent on forced contract labor — the *contrato* system that continued despite nominal abolition decades earlier.
KM#60 is a single-year type for this denomination, with no subsequent strikes carrying identical specifications.
