Produced under the authority of the U.S. colonial administration following the Philippine Organic Act of 1902, which established a new monetary system pegged to the U.S. gold dollar at a ratio of two Philippine pesos to one dollar. The Manila Mint opened in 1920 specifically to produce Philippine coinage locally — prior to that, all pieces in this series were struck at Philadelphia or San Francisco. Issues after 1920 can be attributed to Manila by their "M" mint mark.
Production ceased in 1936 as the newly established Commonwealth of the Philippines prepared its own coinage series, rendering this type obsolete after just over three decades of circulation.
