Bolivia's copper centavo coinage of the 1870s emerged directly from the country's attempt to rationalize its currency following the decimalization reforms of 1864, which had replaced the old real-based system. The 1878 date falls in the immediate run-up to the War of the Pacific — within months, Chilean forces would occupy the Bolivian coastal province of Antofagasta, triggering a conflict that ultimately cost Bolivia its entire Pacific seaboard and left it landlocked, a status it has never recovered.
