正面描述 Central field displays the Nicaraguan national coat of arms, featuring a triangular shield bearing a volcanic landscape with five peaks rising above water, surmounted by a radiant sun and a Phrygian cap; the shield is flanked by crossed rifles and a Caduceus staff below, with two cornucopiae extending outward on either side. A wreath motif crowns the top of the shield. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE NICARAGUA runs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the date 1878 is inscribed at the bottom of the field. The entire design is enclosed within a fine milled border.

附加信息

Nicaragua's 1878 centavo was among the earliest coins struck for the republic following the dissolution of the Central American Federation, and KM#1 designation confirms it as the foundational type of the modern Nicaraguan series. The issue was produced in Birmingham, almost certainly at the Heaton Mint, which held near-monopoly supply relationships with Central American republics during this period.

The copper-nickel alloy was a deliberate choice — pure copper coinage had suffered badly from counterfeiting across the region in preceding decades.
