The Argentine Confederation was a short-lived federal arrangement that governed most of Argentina from 1831 to 1861, excluding the breakaway Province of Buenos Aires, which maintained its own separate government and finances. This 1854 copper issue was among the first standardized coinage struck for the Confederation, produced at the Birmingham mint under contract — domestic minting infrastructure being essentially nonexistent at the time. The political split with Buenos Aires meant the Confederation operated on chronically strained revenues, making even modest copper coinage a statement of institutional intent rather than fiscal strength.
