The bank name 'LIETUVOS BANKAS' arches along the upper border, with the issuance date and place 'KAUNAS, 1922 m. LAPKR. 16 d.' and a second 'LIETUVOS BANKAS' legend below the central vignette. Lithuania's 1922 currency reform replaced the ostmark and the tsarist ruble with the litas system, and the centas notes were the smallest denominations issued under the new Lietuvos Bankas. The 1 Centas (Pick 7) was printed by W. Hagelberg in Berlin — one of several German printing firms contracted for the inaugural Lithuanian series, a practical choice given proximity and the lingering postwar availability of quality intaglio capacity in Germany.
Notes of this denomination circulated hard and fast; purchasing power was low enough that they passed through many hands quickly. Survivors in any decent condition are proportionally scarcer than the higher denominations from the same issue.
